Bottom Filler for
refilling Epson Cartridges
NOTE: Sometimes cartridges are filled too fast causing the ink
to foam around the exit port area. When this happens, no ink is
available for the print head. These bottom fillers are a nifty
way to remove the foamy ink from the cartridge. You can also use
these fillers to inject the ink right through the exit port.
Note: It is often best to refill your cartridge when the
indicator level reads about 50%. Filling the cartridge when half
full will help forestall the buildup of air pockets when
refilling.
Wear old clothes and work over newspapers or paper towels. You
might also want to wear latex gloves and have extra paper towels
on hand. For best results, never leave your Epson printer
without an installed cartridge - even an empty one - for more
than a few minutes or so, because the ink - the original or our
refill ink - will begin to gel to the consistency of honey,
which will require several cleaning routines to clear.
1.) Attach the bottom filler onto a syringe, making sure that
the plunger is all the way down (you want to withdraw air and
ink, not inject air).
2.) Insert the Bottom filler in to the exit port.
3.) Holding the cartridge at a 45 degree angle (exit port side
down), slowly pull back on the plunger and start drawing out the
foamy ink. Expel the ink from the syringe into a container by
pushing the plunger in. Repeat until no more foam is being
removed from the cartridge. Do this with all colors, using a
separate syringe and bottom filler for each color.
4.) Attach the needle to the syringe and draw about 5cc of ink
out of the bottle. Carefully remove the needle and re-attach
bottom filler. Remove any air in the syringe by pointing the
syringe straight up and pushing the plunger slowly just until
the air is expelled.
5.) Hold the cartridge right side up (exit port down) with the
syringe underneath and slowly inject the ink. Stop injecting
when you see the ink start to come out the vent hole on top of
cartridge. Quickly clean up any ink.
6.) Repeat with other colors.
7.) Wipe off any spilled ink from the outside of the cartridge,
put a piece of tape over all exit ports and vent holes. Let it
sit for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The sponge needs this time to
absorb the ink. If you plan to store the cartridge for any
length of time, leave the tape on.
NOTE: Some people use rivets to seal the exit ports for long
term storage and remove the rivets with a small flat blade
screwdriver just before installing cartridge in the printer.
Others prefer to use electrical tape to seal the exit ports and
install the cartridge with tape left intact and let the printer
print head pierce the tape during installation.
8.) Insert the cartridge into your printer. The vent holes must
be uncovered before using the cartridge, or poor print quality
will result. It may be necessary to run the print head cleaning
routine a few times to prime the print head. If the cartridge
should leak, then take it out and replace the plugs in the exit
ports. |
